This unique kashigata features an emblem of the Imperial Japanese Army; the Star over two crossed swords, with a hammer and chain. The overall outline shape is that is a war fan.This item shows how even nationalism came into the designs of Japanese sweets in the Imperial era at the end of the 19th century and in the early 20th century...

Untitled woodblock print of a mountain village and two figures by Jun-ichirô Sekino (1914-1988). A monochromatic rural scene depicting a row of buildings against a backdrop of trees. In the foreground is a man with net and a boy carrying two buckets on a pole across his shoulders. A lovely example of Sekino's interest in patterns (especially rooftops) combined with his appreciation for people in their familiar surroundings...

Kashigata (wooden sweet mold,) kanji characters "Daiou" (Great) motif; Japan, early 20th C. 2-piece Paddle-type mold to make 5 sweets. L.16.75"(42.5cm) x W.2.375"(6cm) x H.1"(2.5cm.) "Daiou" could be symbolic of any type of "greatness," but was most likely a reference to the country during the Japanese Imperial era. Sweet molds, “kashigata,” have been a part of confectionary culture around the world. Well-known examples in Asia come from Japan, China, Korea, and Indonesia...
