Ancient Byzantine bronze pectoral Reliquary Cross ENCOLPION, circa 9th-12th century A.D. Composed of two separately-cast halves hinged at the base and pinned to a suspension loop above. Cast and chiseled in low relief with the Crucifixion on the obverse and the Virgin Orans on the reverse.
DIMENSIONS: Height: 5 cm x 2 cm (2 inches x 0.79 inches).
CONDITION: In its original condition showing the age and usage with a nice dark brown patina.
Remarks: Reliquary crosses were bought as mementos of pilgrimages to holy sites such as Jerusalem. A holy relic would be placed inside the cross which would then be sealed and worn around the neck.
