This is a Qing Dinasty, 18th Century, flattened rectangular with rounded shoulders form snuff bottle, rounded short neck, and flat oval footing. It is made from fossilized Tooth. It has an orange ground with brown shades of light brown (burnt), beige and nebulous with brownish stripe and lightening-like forms going in all directions throughout the entire bottle. It comes with a golden reticulated metal stopper with a green jade finial. This rare and spectacular looking bottle is in excellent preserved condition. Two identical form snuff bottles are illustrated in 'The Collector's Book of Snuff Bottles", by Bob C. Stevens, Item 365 and 370, page 114. The material is also illustrated in item 1020, page 283 of the same book. This is a Qing Dinasty, 18th Century, with a Circular, Bulbous, tapering towards the bottom form Yellow Jade snuff bottle, with sloping shoulders, rounded short neck, and flat oval footing. Its background is yellow, but it also has shades of light brown (burnt), beige and nebulous with stripe forms of white colors. It also has a couple of natural lines that meet in a porous area in one of its sides. It comes with a light green jade stopper This rather heavy-for-its-size bottle is in excellent preserved condition. Nephrite Yellow Jade is very rare. It originates from China. It is considered as derived from white nephrite what has been affected by the presence of certain materials that develop a yellow tinge. The presence of these mineral formations can be observed in the different shades of yellow, some lighter, others darker, as well as its original white nephrite, in this bottle. Photo #8 shows the different tones of Yellow Jade, including the colors of this bottle. A similar form and material snuff bottle is illustrated in 'The Collector's Book of Snuff Bottles", by Bob C. 18th Century, Japanese Boxwood Netsuke: Recumbent Dog

18th Century, nicely hand-carved Boxwood Netsuke depicting a recumbent Dog that appears to be pleasantly resting. Very nice stylized touches characterizes this netsuke made during the EDO Period of Japan. Unsigned. A bit larger than most netsuke of this type, with large himotoshi, common of carvings made during the 18th century, and beginning of the 19th century..

This type of netsuke were referenced in an article written by Jay Hopkins in the Kenkyukai Journal 12/2 of Summer 1992, where they were said to have been made by the ‘Abstract Monkey Carver’, where he described them as: “It is not that these examples are masterpieces but they have their own simple charm. When first encountered they produce a smile - certainly one of the most endearing and enduring qualities of a netsuke. Moreover, examples have been included in some of the finest collections.

Very rich dark patina, as well as silky smooth surface, derived from polishing and handling. Netsuke measures 1.15 inches (2.9cm) wide, 2.64 inches (6.7cm) long, and 0.78 inches (2.0cm) tall. It is in excellent condition, as may be seen in the posted photos..

18th Century, Japanese finely hand-carved boxwood Netsuke depicting one of the scenes from the Ten Oxen parables; The Return on Ox-back. The character on this parable is shown playing a flute while sitting on the back of an Ox. Chimney himotoshi that starts on the bottom of the irregular platform where the Ox stands, and continues through any of the spaces made by the legs of the animal. Rich patina, lustrous surface. Unsigned. Netsuke measures 1.54 inches (3.9cm) wide, and 1.51 inches (3.8cm) tall. It is in excellent condition, as you may be able to see in the posted photos. A similar netsuke, that belong to the collection of Michael and Rebecca Hauter, is illustrated on page 88 of Hurtig's "Masterpieces of Netsuke Art"

This is a large and spectacular 18th Century Bronze Cloisonne, Twin-Handle Urn with great Archaic form and color. It has two Dragon Head Handles. It is enameled with Penny Flowers and Leaves motif. It has a large mouth (five-inches wide), and it is decorated with a one-inch belt that separates its bulbous body from its neck. It has a raised foot rim. It is stamped with the Japanese kanji that spells the name of its maker: 嶋佐 Shimasa, and it is in excellent preserved condition. This is a finely hand-carved Japanese Netsuke made during the Edo Period (18th Century) that depicts a Chinnan Sennin. He is standing on one foot, and he is dressed with a long robe. He is holding the string of large hat over his right shoulder. Excellent detail and expression. Great two-tone patina. Large himotoshi, common of netsuke from this period. Unsigned. This is finely carved 18th Century Japanese netsuke depicting Jittoku Sennin. He is a Chinese Shih Teh who appears as a boyish figure that is marked with the wrinkles of old age. He is often depicted holding a broom, such as in this case. Incredible large chimney himotoshi, common of netsuke made during the Edo period of Japan. Unsigned. Netsuke measures 1.64 inches (4.2cm) wide, and 2.01 inches (5.1cm) tall. Although it has some wear in the front, it is nicely preserved, with a rich two-tone patina, and in incredible condition for its age.

This is an 18th century Japanese netsuke depicting a sleeping Sarumawashi or monkey trainer, who is unaware that the monkey trainer that he carries on his back is about to steal food from the trainer's basket. Excellent carving with lively expressions. beautiful wear and mellow patina. Deep, uneven himotoshi, common of netsuke from this period. Unsigned. 18th Century Japanese Wood Tall Netsuke: Gama Sennin

18th Century, excellently hand-carved Boxwood Netsuke depicting a standing Gama, wearing the typical mugwort cape with wide sleeves, and a rope tied at his waist, holding a staff with his right hand, and carrying a three-legged toad (that possesses magical powers) on top of his left shoulder. Very interesting himotoshi that starts in the back of the Sennin and exits on the left side of his body (see photo #8). Very rich, dark, lustrous patina. Unsigned.

Netsuke measures 1.22 inches (3.1cm) wide, and 2.86 inches (9.0cm) tall. This is a very fine example of a tall* netsuke. It is in excellent preserved condition, as you may be able to see in the posted photos.

* Oversized or tall netsuke are extremely rare. According to Yakari Yoshida, in a 1999 International Netsuke Society Journal article, this type of netsuke make up approximately only one percent or less of all netsuke held at major collections. According to the author, most of these netsuke were made in the 18th and early 19th centuries, and among the subjects represented by these tall miniature sculptures are Sennin and foreigners, such as the theme of the carving listed here.

Qianlong Period, Sage-Green Jade Snuff Bottle

This is a well-hollowed, Flattened, Spade/Vase form translucent Sage-Green Jade Snuff Bottle with a straight round neck, flat lip, wide mouth, and an oval flat footing. It is simply decorated on one side with a incised engraving, gilt-painted, stylized rendering of a Peony flower plant. The neck is likewise decorated with a geometric patterned ribbon. It comes with a like material stopper. Most likely made during the Qianlong Period of Japan.

Excellently preserved original condition.

This is a fine, 18th century Japanese Netsuke depicting a monk laying on top of Hotei's Bag of Treasures. Wonderful expression with beautiful patina, what has torn golden from use on the bottom. This is a very fine, Qianlong Era (1730 - 1796) , flattened, of spade form Snuff Bottle with a round short neck, concave mouth, and flat concave oval footing. Made of a rare natural Cherry Amber, which is thought to be another form of Jet, with dark inclusions. Its sides are decorated with Foo Dog Masks with short, semi-circular handles, common on bottles made during the Early Qianlong period. The bottle is well-hollowed, with very thin walls, thus, very light in weight (0.4 ounces). The bottle is transparent, with a cherry red color. It has a smooth and lustrous surface. It comes with a cherry amber stopper, with spoon. "The use of small, or miniature bottles was very popular in the early decades of the 18th century. They were used as container for gifts of snuff. so as to limit the amount of snuff that would be distributed to guests or the person being treated with the gift. They were also used as containers for rare or precious snuffs. In social circles, it might have served as a status symbol; just flashing a miniature bottle was a subtle way of showing others that one had the ability to judge among the finest grades of snuff" As stated by Hugh Moss and Stuart Sargent in their book: "The Marakovic Collection". This bottle exhibits similar characteristics (size, form, weight, temperature) as a Natural Cherry Amber Snuff Bottle that we are also listing on this store. Made of a rare red or natural Cherry Amber, which is thought to be another form of Jet. The bottle is well-hollowed, with very thin walls, thus, very light in weight. This is a 19th Century, Dear Horn Antler Ryusa Manu Netsuke carved in a stylized blossom with five petals carrying a crest from a chapter of the Tale of Genji, sorrounded by waves, The other side is carved with an open-work blossom, within a five-point star, surrounded by waves. Typical work by the Asakusa School. Excellent detail on a one-piece, round, slightly domed manju, on a material that is very difficult to carve. unsigned. Netsuke measures 1.60 inches (4.0cm) in diameter, and 0.66 inches (1.7cm) thick. It is in excellent condition, as may be seen in the posted photos.
