Early19th Century Edo School Boxwood Netsuke: Chinese Sage Riding an Ox

Early 19th Century, nicely hand-carved and engraved boxwood netsuke depicting a Chinese Sages riding an Ox while holding peonies in both hands, a symbol of prosperity or congratulations between friends. Chimney himotoshi that starts on the bottom of the platform where the ox stands, and continues through any of the spaces made by the legs of the ox. Rich patination. Unsigned.

Netsuke measures 0.92 inches (2.3cm) wide, 1.40 inches (3.6cm) long, and 1.62 inches (4.1cm) tall. It is in excellent condition, as you may be able to see in the posted photos.

This is a finely made Red-underglazed Porcelain Snuff Bottle, of tubular form with straight neck and rolled rim, wide mouth and perfectly circular underglazed foot rim, characteristic of 19th century period bottles. It depicts a dragon that is chasing a tama, amid flickering flames. It has a four-character Iron red Qianlong mark on on its base. It comes with a coral stopper.

This excellent looking bottle has a couple of hairlines on its neck, but it is solid, and otherwise, in remarkable preserved condition.

This is charming Netsuke, hand-carved during the 19th century in Japan, that depicts a Seated Man, who is beating on a Drum, while stroking his long beard with his left hand. Use and handling has given this piece a nice mwllow patina and a smooth and lustrous surface. It feels very nice to the touch. It is signed in what appears as Hiragana script, but, we are not able to interpret its meaning. It is in excellent preserved condition. It measures 1.25 inches (3.2cm) wide, 1.62 inches (4.1cm) long, and 1.20 inches (3.0cm) tall.

19th century finely hand-carved Japanese boxwood netsuke depicting Three Monkeys that are squatting on top of Daikoku's Hammer. Very fine detail and harmonius form characterizes this superb miniature carving. Signed Koryu on an irregular red tablet inlaid of the barrel-like mallet. It measures 1.15 inches (2.9cm) wide, 1.94 inches (4.9cm) long, and 1.20 inches (3.1cm) tall. It is in outstanding preserved condition, as may be seen in the posted photos. This is a fine, well-hallowed, Aventurine Glass Snuff Bottle of robust circular rounded form, with a high rounded neck, a flat wide lip, and a raised oval flat foot. The slightly translucent stone is made up of thousands of clustered gold and bronze colored sand-like particles within a brown colored ground. It comes with a green jade stopper with spoon.

This excellent looking bottle is in remarkable preserved condition.

This is a fine Famille Rose Figural Molded Porcelain Snuff Bottle depicting in detail and bright colors a River Landscape. It shows two figures on a boat, and a few folks swimming in the river water. There is Daoguang Period (1821 - 1850) seal Mark in red letters to the base. It comes with a green hardstone stopper with spoon. There is some wear commensurate with age, but, it is in remarkable preserved condition. This is a finely carved and molded Rock Hair crystal Snuff Bottle in the form of a flattened multi-sided, rectangular Snuff Bottle, with an incurved mouth, and very rare triangular prism shaped shoulders and footing. It has a transparent tone, with messes and burst of purple needles, and sudden explosions of golden brown of tourmaline needles. Flattened mushroom shape pink stopper with spoon. This excellent and very rare formed, but interesting looking bottle is in remarkable preserved condition. EDO, Late 18th Century, Japanese Wood Netsuke: Merchant

Late 18th Century, nicely hand-carved wood Netsuke depicting a Merchant who seems concerned, probably, because he has not been able to sell his stock. He is shown here with his right hand over his head while he is taking a step forward, with his right heel slightly raised.

Very nice stylized touches characterizes this netsuke made during the EDO Period of Japan. The large and uneven himotoshi on this netsuke is typical of carvings made during the 18th century, and beginning of the 19th century. Rich patina. Wear and handling has given it a very smooth and shiny surface, with very pleasant tactile qualities. Unsigned.

Netsuke measures 1.46 inches (3.7cm) wide, and 2.14 inches (5.4cm) tall. It is in excellent condition for its age (over 200 years), as may be seen in the posted photos.

This is a 19th century, flattened, Square form with rounded shoulders, Jasper Snuff Bottle. It has a design prevalent mostly in snuff bottles made during the 18th century and early 19th century. It has banded Red, orange, brown, and beige colors, and chocolate spots. It has a raised rectangular base. The bottle comes with a glass red stopper. It is in excellent preserved condition. 19th Century Japanese Boxwood Netsuke: Professional Sneezer

19th Century, finely hand-carved Wood Netsuke depicting a Professional Sneezer, sitting cross-legged, and holding a bone nose-ticking stick or poker.

According to Dr. Karl Schwarz, in his book "Netsuke Subjects', "in old Japan, a curious type of beggar who sat by the wayside, for a small sum of money he inserted a feather or a small pointed stick inside his nose causing him to sneeze violently and often, wishing his client good health and long life."

Well-rendered carving of a popular personality in Japanese culture, beautifully well-preserved.

This fine miniature sculpture measures 1.40 inches (3.6cm) wide and 1.40 inches (3.6cm) tall

This is a rare, seldom seen, Snuff Bottle made from Coconut Shell, of a rectangular form, tapering towards base, with a raised rectangular footing, and a short rounded neck. It has been decorated with an incised landscape in the front, and an inscription, possibly a poem, in the back. It has a deep chocolate color with specks. It is very light in weight. It comes with a metal stopper with a coral dome, and a brass spoon. This rare and curious bottle is in excellent preserved condition. This 19th Century, finely hand-carved Iwami Ebony Netsuke that shares similar carving and material characteristics as the Tree Stump attibuted to Jikan Ganbun depicts a Toad that also provides a functionality of an Ashtray. This toad is also remarkably similar to the toad that the Gamma Sennin (item 98 of Bonhams Iwami Catalog* – photo # 6) is sitting on. Nicely detailed rendering of the rough textured skin on the back and sides of the toad, which contrasts with the smooth extended throat and concave bottom of the netsuke. Netsuke is unsigned. It measures 1.125 inches in diameter and 1.125 inches tall. Netsuke is in excellent condition, as may be seen in the posted photos. *Robert S. This is a 19th century Japanese Netsuke depicting a standing Shoki, the demon-queller, with his drawn sword on his right arm; a stern expression on his face. Some of the porous characteristic of this material is observed on the bottom of the netsuke. Nice, uneven himotoshi shows signs of use. Unsigned. It measures 1.08 inches (2.8cm) wide, and 2.02 inches (5.1cm) tall.

This is a well-hollowed, Flattened, Rectangular with rounded shoulders tapering towards base, with long rounded neck , with a raised splayed oval recessed footing, snuff bottle. It is made from deep green with black vertical bands malachite. It is carved, in high relief, with a scene of birds in a pond amid lotus plants. It comes with a like material stopper.

Excellently preserved original condition.

18th Century, Japanese finely hand-carved boxwood Netsuke depicting one of the scenes from the Ten Oxen parables; The Return on Ox-back. The character on this parable is shown playing a flute while sitting on the back of an Ox. Chimney himotoshi that starts on the bottom of the irregular platform where the Ox stands, and continues through any of the spaces made by the legs of the animal. Rich patina, lustrous surface. Unsigned. Netsuke measures 1.54 inches (3.9cm) wide, and 1.51 inches (3.8cm) tall. It is in excellent condition, as you may be able to see in the posted photos. A similar netsuke, that belong to the collection of Michael and Rebecca Hauter, is illustrated on page 88 of Hurtig's "Masterpieces of Netsuke Art"

This is a finely hand-carved 19th century Japanese Netsuke depicting a Karako wearing his typical Chinese robe, who is carrying his little brother on his shoulders. Younger karako's hair puffs inlaid with darn horn. Rich patina. Unsigned. Netsuke measures 0.82 inches (2.1cm) wide, and 1.72 inches (4.4cm). Netsuke is in excellent condition, as may be seen in the posted photos.

Early 19th Century Japanese Wood Netsuke: ACROBAT

This is a finely hand carved, Early 19th Century Wood Netsuke depicting an Acrobat, who is wearing a fundoshi and sports an Eboshi hat on his head, demonstrating his contortionist skills by placing his left leg over the back of his head.

Very nice carving with great, glossy patina. Unsigned. It measures 1.60 inches (4.0cm) wide, and 1.58 inches (4.0cm) tall. It is in excellent condition, as shown in the posted photos.

This is an Early 19th Century Netsuke depicting a Monkey sitting astride on a bamboo tree while hungrily eating one of its branches. Large uneven himotoshi, common of netsuke made during the Edo period of Japan. Netsuke measures 1.28 inches (3.2cm) wide, and 2.55 inches (6.5cm) tall. It is in excellent condition as shown in the posted photos.
