This a superb Wooden Carved Polychrome Crucifix made in Spain during the 18th century possibly from Cypress wood. It was made in the manner made popular by the Spanish for the making of religious figures/sculptures from the 12th century, which consisted of carving the sculpture from light wood (cypress), then covering it in layers of Gesso (Yeso), the flesh tones of the face, arms, torso an legs were applied by a painter, and finally, 'Estofado' was applied to embellish the drapery (cloth) with gilded touches.

This sculpture is very rare because it doesn't have any losses. The anatomy is intact and most of its colors remain as originally applied; even the dark color of the blood remains as originally done. The painting in the entire sculpture has acquired a darker color or patina due to its age. In some small areas, the original paint has dissipated, possibly due to heat, and the underlying white gesso can be seen. Otherwise, it remains in its original condition.

Normally, sculpture of this age are missing finger or toes. The fact that this sculpture remains almost intact is remarkable. The cross, also made of wood and painted black, appears original to the corpus.

Excellently preserved original condition.

The Cross measure 26 inches and 12 inches wide

The Corpus measures 14.5 inches tall, and 11 inches wide

Early 19th C. Japanese Wood Netsuke: Wood Gatherer, Signed YOSHINAGA, Miura

This is an Extremely Rare example of a wood netsuke excellently carved by Yoshinaga, as signed on a border, on the bottom of this superb miniature sculpture, depicting a Wood Gatherer who has taken a rest from his daily journey by sitting on top of a rock. He is carrying on his back a wicker basket, and two bundles of wood on top of it. He is also holding a hoe on his right hand.

It is extremely rare to find a piece made from wood by this highly skilled carver whose works were mostly done in other natural materials. But, like other pieces made by him, it exhibits similar traits such as the meticulous detail used in the rendering of the wicker basket and bundles of wood, the modeling of Chinese subjects with similar facial and dress characteristics, and the poorly etched signature that has been placed in an inconspicuous position on the piece. Netsuke has a chimney himotoshi that starts on the bottom of the rock, and continues on any of the holes on the sides of the rock.

You may reference an article written by Milton Stratos, The Netsuke of Miura Yoshinaga, that appeared in the Spring 2011 issue of the International Netsuke Society Journal, for other similitudes in characteristics in this piece that are shared by other works by this master.

Netsuke measures 0.92 inches (2.3cm) wide, 1.14 inches (2.9cm) long, and 1.72 inches (4.4cm) tall. It is in remarkably outstanding condition as you may see in the posted photos.

Note: A reference to Miura Yoshinaga and his signature may be found on page 1239 of Lazarnick's 'Netsuke and Inro Artists, and How to Read their Signatures'

The Virgin in Prayer, Early 19th Century. Oil on Canvas measuring 22 by 17 inches in a gilt frame 26.5 by 22 inches (The original framed canvas has been placed into a larger frame – see back of painting). This work of art depicts the face and praying hands of Mary, her sad expression with downcast eyes and pursed mouth, clothed in a white palla with yellow trim and a blue robe with red trim; executed in sombre colours and with emphasis on the Virgin's sad and thoughtful facial expression. Attributed to Janos Rombauer; from an original 'The Virgin at Prayer' by Sassoferrato, a version of which is in the National Gallery, London. Fine condition, a couple of minor repairs. A Similar piece was offered for sale at Timeline Auctions, London, on 07 September 2021, with an estimated price of $5,550 - $8,320 - Photo #5) Janos Rombauer (Hungarian 28 May 1782 – 12 February 1849) was a portrait painter in the Kingdom of Hungary. He also worked for a time in Saint Petersburg. He was a representative of the Biedermeier artistic style in Hungary. At the age of nineteen, he began working as a portraitist in Pest (today Budapest). His first known miniature dates from 1802. Around 1805, probably in Bártfa (Bardejov), he met the Polish aristocrat, Józef August Iliński [pl] who, at that time, was in the service of the Russian government. Impressed by his talent, he invited him to his estate near Romaniv, in present-day Ukraine. By 1806, he was living and working in Saint Petersburg; teaching as well as painting. In 1818, he married Amalie Baumann (c.1795–1843), a Baltic German. During his stay, he became a member of the Imperial Academy of Arts and took part in their exhibitions. Vladimir Borovikovsky and Orest Kiprensky seem to have had a significant influence on his style. He painted numerous portraits of the nobility, Hungarian as well as Russian, and many prominent citizens of the Kingdom of Hungary. In 1835, he received a commission to paint portraits of the faculty at the Lutheran College. He also created religious works. Altogether, he is known to have created 248 works, although many have been lost. His surviving works may be seen in the Hermitage Museum, the Tretyakov Gallery, the Hungarian National Gallery and the Slovak National Gallery.

This excellent 19th century WKC (Weyersburg, Kirschbaum & Company, Solingen, Germany) Imperial Hunting Cutlass is 22 inches in length. The mounts are composed of beautiful brass throughout the hilt and scabbard. The pommel area has a fluted nut at the top center of the cap which acts as a threaded tang nut. The pommel has a smooth upper surface with curved edges featuring line decorated sides. The ferrule below is also lined, having otherwise smooth surfaces. The crossguard features the plain center block area on both sides and the quillon arms go outward in the shape of deer’s hooves. The hair is simulated from the deer’s legs from hand enhancing into the metal. The left guard goes upward the right guard goes downward. Below is an interesting clam shell having scalloped edges. In the center area it features the eight-rayed, faceted silver star that bears the eagle surrounded by the order motto "SUUM CUIQUE" - To each his own - and the double laurel branch engraved in gold on white enamel. There is hand work evident to the renderings. The grip really ties in these interesting mounts. It is a thick stubby stag antler, having tan and brown colors to the raised grains. It tips slightly to the left and was obviously chosen for its specifications that almost exactly fit the ferrule and pommel cap with little trimming required. This weighty stubby grip is decorated with three leafless acorns with finely checkered caps. A most fetching hilt here, much different in style than most. The blade has a fuller down to three quarters of its length. It has been cleaned and polished with most details of etching worn away. Edge has been sharpened. Blade length is 16 inches. The scabbard retains its original black leather with some scratches and signs of wear. It is decorated with twin accent lines that run the length of the edges on both sides. The brass mounts have scalloped edges and are retained by staples. The lower mount is enhanced with dual lines and has a couple of scratches and lined dents, while the upper mount its in excellent condition and features a fine acorn-shaped lug with nice detail to the acorn cap
