Very Fine, Extremely Rare, Double-Gourd Conglomerate Puddingstone Snuff Bottle

This is a extremely rare (chances are that you will not find another double-gourd conglomerate puddingstone snuff bottle anywhere) Snuff Bottle made in the form of a Double-Gourd as the Chinese cloisonne bottles dating to the 18th century. Well-hollowed, a difficult chore on this type of bottles.

The stone is made up of a conglomerate of sedimentary pebbles that appear as floating and striking irregular elongated brownish and grayish shapes amid a very unusual dark-green cementing matrix. These combinations of shapes and colors compliment the simple and tactile form of this bottle.

It comes with a light brown agate stopper.

This wonderful and unique bottle is in outstanding preserved condition.

A bottle with similar material was sold at Christie's in July 2013 for $8,750.00. See photo #7

EDO, Late 18th Century, Japanese Wood Netsuke: Merchant

Late 18th Century, nicely hand-carved wood Netsuke depicting a Merchant who seems concerned, probably, because he has not been able to sell his stock. He is shown here with his right hand over his head while he is taking a step forward, with his right heel slightly raised.

Very nice stylized touches characterizes this netsuke made during the EDO Period of Japan. The large and uneven himotoshi on this netsuke is typical of carvings made during the 18th century, and beginning of the 19th century. Rich patina. Wear and handling has given it a very smooth and shiny surface, with very pleasant tactile qualities. Unsigned.

Netsuke measures 1.46 inches (3.7cm) wide, and 2.14 inches (5.4cm) tall. It is in excellent condition for its age (over 200 years), as may be seen in the posted photos.

This an exquisitively carved Baroque Crucifix, probably made in Spain in the Early 18th Century in the manner of The Christ of Clemency (Cristo de la Clemencia) of the Seville Cathedral, Spain. The Christ's body displays, in a lifelike manner, the ribcage pressed against his stretched skin, and carefully rendered arms and leg muscles, with visible veins, to highlight his humanity. The hands perfectly carved (the left hand missing portions of fingers), and feet with well-delineated toes and nails. A crown of triple spikes rests over his head that shows a well-rendered lifelike hair. His head is turned down to the right.

The crucifix preserves its original fittings, which is extremely rare for a crucifix of this age. The cross is made of two natural pieces of wood, painted in black, but now well patinated with the passage of time, which is adorned with incised carved lines within geometrically shaped areas where the hands and feet rests, that have been gilded with real gold. The ends of the cross covered with real silver cups. The cross is inserted in a base that also sports a silver band on its bottom.

Excellently preserved original condition.

The Cross and base measure 24.5 inches

The base measures 5 squared inches on the bottom

and 4 squared inches on top

The Corpus measures 11 inches tall, and 10 inches wide

Moss Agate (also called a form of Dendritic Chalcedony) Snuff Botle of flattened rectangular shape, supported on a raised oval elongated footrim, the gently slopping shoulders rising to a cylindrical neck, with concave and wide mouth; the stone showing cluster of mineral (iron or Manganese ixide) of green and brown colors on a grayish ground on one side, and muddle ferns and tree branches mostly in green, dark green and some brown patches, on the other side.

Very well hollowed; so much so, that the artisan who worked the inside of the bottle must have spent countless hours carving the inside to obtain such thin walls, making the bottle lighter than other bottles of similar size. The bottle comes with a white jade with some green inclusions.

The outstanding bottle is in remarkable preserved condition.

A similar shaped bottle was sold at auction by IGabel, on 28 April 2020, for $3,125.00. See photo #8

This is a very rare form for a Jade Bottle, its Cylindrical Form, and the variety of color skins that surround it and that appear to portray their own artistic rendering with splashes of Russet, brownish, light brown, black, gray, over a white-gray ground. This a Large Wooden Carved Polychrome Crucifix made during the Early part of the 18th century possibly from Cypress wood. It was made in the manner made popular by the Spanish for the making of religious figures/sculptures from the 12th century, which consisted of carving the sculpture from light wood (cypress), then covering it in layers of Gesso (Yeso), the flesh tones of the face, arms, torso an legs were applied by a painter, and finally, 'Estofado' was applied to embellish the drapery (cloth) with gilded touches. This sculpture has been carefully carved to show the image of Christ. The anatomy is intact for the most part; its only missing a couple of finger from each hand, which is remarkable, given that this statue has been around for about 200 years. Most of its colors remain as originally applied on about 98% of the corpus body; even the bright color of the blood remains as originally done. The painting in the entire sculpture has acquired a darker color or patina due to its age. It seem as though the sides of its loin cloth has been partially cut on both ends (right and left) and gilded, but it must have been generations ago, because they show some worm holes that are inactive. Otherwise, it remains in its original condition. Normally, sculpture of this age are missing flakes of skin on various parts of its corpus; showing the underlying gesso, but the skin and its colors remained as when it was originally made The cross, which appears original to the corpus, also made of wood and painted brown, shows its original decorative gilded convex lines. The are also some worm holes, although inactive on the upper portion of the cross. Excellently preserved original condition. The Cross measure 30 inches tall and 12.25 inches wide The Corpus measures 16.5 inches tall, and 9.5 inches wide

As described by the American Art Association in their 1924 Catalog: "Vigorously modeled in conventional forms, seated in haunches, on flat multilinear pedestals with curved feet and cusped fringe. They represent the mythical lions, called "dogs of Foo", the guardians of Buddhist temples and images. Both with open mouths, coats of waved lines and spreading tails. The male has right forepaw resting on ball of brocade and the female has left forepaw on a playful cub. Soft "pipe clay" pottery, covered with a thin glaze of light bronze-green of malachite color with mottlings of earthy green, giving a remarkable re-semblance to a very ancient bronze." PROVENANCE: Used to belong to A. W. Bahr and were part of his Chinese Art Collection during the early 20th century. They were purchased at an American Art Association Auction, in New York, in 1916, to become part of the Kano Oshima Collection. They were sold at another American Art Association Auction, in New York, in 1924. (lot 745) to an unknown collector. Photo #11 - from the American Art Association catalog for the 1924 auction. A single similar Foo Dog sold at auction at Sotheby's Hong Kong for 302,400 HKD (USD$38,682) on 17 December 2022 (Photo #12) The pair represent classic male and female lions which were used by the Chinese as symbols of protection for a home or workplace. During the Ming and Qing, and earlier Dynasties the pair are found as depicted here, with the female lion holding or caressing a cub, representing the cycle of life. The male lion is shown with its right paw over an 'embroidery ball', carved in a geometric pattern, representing supremacy over the world. Traditionally, the female lion is seen as protector of home occupants, while the male lion protects the structure of the house. The statues are in excellent preserved condition, with no chips or repairs. They are heavily patinated, and show some slight wear.
