This Edo-period bronze quail incense burner is a stunning piece of Japanese craftsmanship. The lifelike form of the quail, intricately detailed and gracefully curved, showcases the artistry of the era. With a beautifully patinated bronze surface and intricate feather patterns, it is both a functional incense burner and a work of art, capturing the essence of the aesthetics of the day.

According to an inscription on the underside of the lid, in the year 1861 this piece was given as an offering to Namiyoshi Minamoto and had formerly belonged to Yōkyō-in Temple (described as a “temple relic”). This description as a "relic" suggests a date of production well before the time when this box was prepared for this piece. In fine antique condition, this exquisite incense burner is approximately 3.75 inches wide (9.5cm) and stands 5.1 inches tall (13cm). It comes in with a period wood box with an inscription on the underside of the lid. The inscription reads: A Relic of the Yōkyōin Temple. A gilded quail incense burner. Offered to Namiyoshi Minamoto for veneration and admiration in the fourth month of the year of the Dog, during the second year of the Bunkyū era, in the Eastern Capital.
