From a 2006 excavation site in Tokyo known to be occupied by the Owari Tokugawa clan—the most senior contingent of the Tokugawa clan that united Japan under one rule—this lovely Mishima tea bowl has been given a new lease on life with a gorgeous and detailed kintsugi repair with maki-e gold painting. Known to have been devoted patrons to cultural institutions, the Tokugawa’s governance and policies contributed greatly to the flourishing of arts, literature, theater, and urban culture in Japan during their rule. In addition, they were collectors of all sorts of fine pottery, paintings, metal work, and other decorative arts from across Japan. This tea bowl then would have been part of this vast collection. Details about the excavation can be found here: https://bunkakanko-annai.city.shinjuku.lg.jp/shosai3/?id=J070 where you can also see a partially reconstructed tea bowl with the exact shape and markings as the one shown above.

In fine antique condition, this piece is 4.75 inches at its wides point (12cm) and stands 3.5 inches tall (9cm). It comes with a decorative display cushion and in a custom made box made to exceptionally high standards. In addition, there is a protective white wrapping cloth for storage. Translations of the source page with information regarding the excavation available with a purchase if desired.
