Crafted from locally sourced Bizen clay, this mid-Edo period vase embodies simplicity, beauty, and understated elegance. Its unassuming form showcases the natural beauty of the clay, enhanced by a delicate ash glaze. The texture and shape evoke a sense of rustic charm, reflecting the profound harmony between human creativity and the organic world. Now several centuries old, this piece continues to serves not only as a functional display piece, but also as a symbol of the enduring legacy and cultural significance of Japanese ceramic history.

Luckily, thanks to the diligence and passion of a researcher by the name of Katsura Matasaburo (1901-1986) we can be assured that this vase is authentic and indeed a product of the mid-Edo period (300+ years old). Originally a school teacher, Katsura became profoundly interested in folklore and ethnology which would later lead him to take up an interest in traditional ceramics. After many years studying ancient kilns (some through excavation), potting styles, inscriptions, and potting marks, he settled on old Bizen-ware as being his life’s work and passion—writing a number of books and scholarly articles down through the years while also amassing a considerable private collection.

In fine antique condition, this Edo period vase is 5.5 inches in diameter at its widest point (14cm) and stands 9.25 inches tall (23.5cm). It comes with a box provided by distinguished researcher, author, and collector Katsura Matasaburo that provides specific details regarding the origin of this artwork. Together in the box is a vintage wrapping cloth custom fit to this piece.
