Shades of red ripple like fire in the kiln across the variegated surface of this large Koro by Shino master Kato Toyohisa enclosed in the original wooden box titled Aka-Shino Koro. Whenever one looks into a wood burning kiln during the firing, this is what is visible; ash molten on the sides of pots turned red hot by flames blasting through, long tendrils of fire wrapping about the wavering forms...

Form and void are everything with Maeta Akihiro, and this piece is a fine example of that idea.  Maeta uses no decoration, no overt gestures to get our attention, but relies on simplicity and elegant shapes covered in his pure white glazes.  This comes in the original signed wooden box titled Hakuji Mentori Tsubo.

Igneous form is the word with Fujioka Shuhei and these two splendid works enclosed in the original signed wooden boxes titled Iga Tokkuri and Guinomi respectively. It shows a state of nature, not a state of intent, as if the piece came to be. It is this sense of raw elementalism which puts Japanese pottery apart, and gives it its unique place of reverence in world ceramics...

Ash crusts a thin veil over the richly textured Shigaraki clay of this amazing Tsubo by Tsujimura Shiro enclosed in the original wooden box titled Uzukumaru.  I see an abraded rock face weeping water somewhere deep in the mountains of Japan, a journey in the mind inspired by the unpredictable billowing of melted ash blasting though the kiln, touching each pot in a unique way and leaving its indelible mark.

An organic form covered in thick emerald glaze Higashida Shigemasa and enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Oribe Jikiro.  The eclectic shape is rendered roma block of clay, hollowed and torn, like the ragged crags of Gifu, home of this pottery tradition.  Natural textures to bring out the depths of the oribe green, and electric shimmers of blue rush over the edges evoking the sense of water on the move...

Bidoro rain down like a glass bead curtain over the terracotta clay of this Shigaraki Tsubo by Furutani Michio enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shigaraki Uzukumaru Tsubo. This is a superb example of this important artists work, showing both his reverence for traditional form and the lengths he went ot reviving the traditions of wood fired kiln effects...

Mori Togaku was born in Inbe, in the heart of Bizen territory in 1937. Following graduation from Okayama University in 1957, he taught art for a short time before dedicating himself to pottery in 1962. He was recognized quite early by the Japanese Ceramics Society, awarded in 1969, and would receive the JCS Gold award in 2002, one of the most coveted prizes in Japan. He exhibited with the Nihon Togeiten (Japanese National Pottery Exhibition) from 1971...

A breathtaking icy-blue ceramic powdered tea container by Ajiki Hiro enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Ruri Shioyu Chaki (Ruri Salt Glaze Tea Impement). Facets are torn from the natural form, more like some rare stone than a typical Tea Caddy. The slat glaze crawls on the surface as if it is alive, and it is alive with brilliant colors.
