This is a mid 19th century painting of a young girl in a beautiful landscape setting. It is painted on academy board which measures 10 1/2" x 12 1/2" and is mounted in a beautiful carved frame which appears to be original to the painting. The frame measures 18" x 16". This could be a early American folk art portrait depicting a memorial to the young lady. She is holding in her hand some grapes on a vine and this is a symbol of Christian redemption. It also relates to the Bible in which the branch is Isaiah's metaphor for the Messiah. The very tranquil and peaceful painting is painted in colors with a brown tone. The artist of this painting created a theme of peace in this painting. This interesting folk art painting of a young lady is painted in the style of the Quaker painter and Preacher, Edward Hicks (1780-1849). The painting is untouched and has the normal wear of a mid 19th Century painting. Chemical Analysis of the paint shows an average of 3 separate tests were 50.7%, Lead Pb 38.8%, Arsenic As 4.5%, Chlorine Cl 3.8%, Iron Fe 2.9%, and Mercury Hg 2%.
