A rare painted early wooden figure, Ivory Coast, Baulé, from the famous Danish Artist and Sculptor, Robert Jacobsen private collection and from the 19th.- or very early 20th. century

The figure appears facing the front, symmetrical with her arms resting on her stomach, which was a sign of peace for the Baulé people. She is dressed in a loincloth painted in black, red and white.

An artful carving in a hard dark solid wood. Wonderful facial expression even for the elaborate type, with its half-closed eyes, which resembles coffee grains, that give the face a serene expression. A particularly refined hairstyle on this figure, can be attributed to people of high class. The scarification as well as having an aesthetic function, also tell us which ethnic group it belongs to. The pronounced calves are characteristic of the oldest Baulé works.

Size: 39,5 cm. tall.

Condition: Choice, good very fine for the type early type, small drying crack, othervise completely intact with fading of colours and patina consistent with the high age and use.

Provenance: Ulf Gudmundsen Tribal art collection, c. 1950s-2007. Ulf was a Danish collector of Tribal woodcarvings, and his collection was especially rich on high quality Yoruba figures.
Ex. Egeskov Fine Arts, c. 2000.
Ex Robert Jacobsen private collection. Robert Julius Tommy Jacobsen (4 June 1912 – 26 January 1993) was a Danish sculptor and painter. The Danish Robert Award is named in his honor.
