Ido-gata Hagi chawan made to resemble a katakuchi pouring vessel. Glazed in a milky, creamy pink to beige tinged Hagi glaze, this chawan has a “ceremonial” spout applied, harkening back to the early days of chanoyu when found objects played the essential role in the ceremony...

This rare Ido chawan is glazed in a milky ash, Hagi style glaze and was presumably made at the kiln of the Tenryu-ji temple (Kyoto-yaki) as it bares the seal of the kiln. The clay was made using ground roof tile, a piece brought back from China which is explained in the accompanying paperwork provided with the chawan...

This large Zenga chawan is glazed in a rich Oribe with a panel of ash clear glaze on which Kasumi Bunsho brushed “Don’t Know” and his full signature, Myoshin Abbot Jishunken with various seals. The Mino tradition chawan was made by Hayashi Ryouji of the Souzan kiln to act as the platform for Bunsho’s idiosyncratic and spontaneous calligraphy...

This subtle, yet impressive mizusashi is by modern Karatsu legend; Nakazato Takeshi (b. 1937). This rounded, bowl shaped mizusashi is coated in a velvety layer of green ash with several areas of flashed iron red hi-iro and a patch of glassy bidoro where the piece faced the assaulting fire from Takeshi’s Ryutagama wood kiln. This pot was created slightly out of round and has a wonderful custom made roiro black lacquer lid to finish of the piece...

This large Haku En-Yu, white salt fired, chawan is by Kyoto master potter; Iwabuchi Shigeya (1925-1993). This soft white chawan has very subtle undertones of a pink blush over its surface and is covered with a series of crazed and crackled salt glaze deposited on the white slipped surface of the bowl. The generous bowl shape is reminiscent of older Hagi and even Korean chawan and is terminated with an exceptional bamboo node formed foot...

Wonderful lobed chaire by Bizen veteran potter; Takahara Shoji (1941-2000). This elegant Bizen chaire has casual lobed indents around its solid form with a spontaneous incised line creating a boundary between body and shoulder. The chaire face (omote) is covered in a rich green ash showing signs of a horizontal tamadare run while the rear (ura) has sweeping effects of hi-iro capitalizing on the traditional Bizen tsuchi-aji...

This summer, natsu-wan, style chawan is glazed in Ishii’s own Oribe glaze that shimmers with iridescence and allows plenty of the tsuchi-aji to peak through as he glazed the pot. This great celadon & tessha glazed chawan is by noted 20th century master; Kawai Takeichi (Bu'ichi). This elegantly formed chawan exhibits a skillful use of iron tessha over a gosu based celadon glaze that shows a wonderfully mysterious that appears like drifting “metallic” clouds on a soft amber to green background. The interior of the chawan is also awash with broad bands and speckles of the rich iron glaze that seems suspended on the surface...

This Kobu- Shino chawan is by Sakai Kobu and is an exceptional example of his work. The nebula like decoration around the intentionally distorted tsu-tsu style chawan with undulating lip has a quality of three dimensions within the glaze. The rich and well controlled surface exhibits iron red, blue-grey, white and lavender tones within the glaze and it is obvious why Sakai is so highly regarded as a modern Mino potter by looking at this chawan...

A Large natsu-wan by chadogu specialist; Kamiya Eisuke. This teabowl is glazed in a rich yohen-tetsu-yu glaze that runs from rusty red tones at the lip to hare’s fur and glassy black drips in the mikomi and near the kodai with much of the glaze being infused with iron crystals trapped within the glaze. The mikomi is filled with a black glass and covered over in iron crystals and is like looking out into the night sky...
