Rare and magnificent silver and natural turquoise hair clip by New York Modernist Art Smith(1917-1982). An African American, he took his inspiration from African tribal art and costume to create "sculpture to wear". Most of his work is in brass and copper. It is not often that he worked in silver and even more rare to find stones and silver. The central piece of the hair clip measures 2 3/8" long and 2 1/2" wide at the top, narrowing to 1 1/2" at the very bottom. The stones are bezel set natural turquoise, all free of chips or cracks and all original. The hair pin measures 4" and fits securely into the central piece. Signed Art Smith as shown.
