This impressive and attractive pottery model of a horse was made during the Yuan Dynasty (AD 1279 - 1368). Such figures from the Yuan Dynasty are very distinctive and are particularly rare and desirable. The surface of these figures is typically fired to grey, or almost black, and sometimes, as in this case, burnished to a smooth finish.
The horse is laden with a pack on its back, on top of which is tied a tiger skin. Note the detail to the horse's tail, mane and his very friendly looking face!
This horse is a large example of its type with a length of 34 cm and height of 27.5 cm; the figure is 32.5 cm tall. Condition is very good with any possible repair having been performed to a professional standard.
This has been in our private collection of at least fifteen years and not previously offered for sale.
Black pottery Yuan Dynasty items are relatively unknown outside China and are not widely published. However, similar examples can be seen in two publications of private collections: "Celestial Horses & Long Sleeve Dancers" by Robert Jacobsen and "Horses for Eternity" by Victor Choi.
Also for sale separately from our private collection is a Yuan black pottery figure (stock number MC375) and a further horse (with Oxford TL test) and groom (stock number MC376).
