Offered is a very fine mid-18th Century Japanese porcelain oval lobed or quatrefoil-type bowl featuring molded decoration of suns and scrolls, and an underglaze blue landscape scene. This piece also has underglaze blue designs to the reverse, probably stylized bird forms, and a mark observed on pieces from the 1750-80 period within the Shibata Collection at the Kyushu Ceramic Museum (see, e.g., Shibata Collection Volume IV, Object 280). This mark is a scrolling "fuku" type mark with a "roof" above. The bowl offered here is closely related to a similarly shaped bowl with the same molded sun decorations and similar molded scrolling, as well as a very similar underglaze blue landscape, within the Shibata Collection (Volume IV, Object 282); that object is considered to date to the 1750-80 period. I can provide further information on the Shibata pieces upon request. This piece measures about 16.5 cm by 14.7 cm by 4.9 cm, and weighs about 299 grams. Condition overall is very good, with a couple of minor glaze lines from the cooling process (see pictures), a few small glaze pops and burns from firing, and signs of normal use, but no major chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. All in all a lovely and uncommon form in 18th Century Imari porcelain/Japanese porcelain!
