Late 19th to early 20th century Chinese porcelain figure of a mythical beast crouching on a rock above cresting waves with its head lowered. Wonderful potting, excellent face, beautiful use of turquoise and aubergine colored glazes. Great patina, compressed dust on the surface, one tiny spot of loss to the glaze. Height 2.5 inches.

Late Meiji (1890s to 1912) Japanese temple boxwood seal of square section. Excellent quality crisp carving in seal script, old red seal paste in the grooves. Gentle horizontal groove on one side indicates the position of the top of the imprint. Beautiful patina on the surface of wood, signs of use adding to the presence of the object. Taisho period (1920s) lacquered wood kogo (box for incense during tea ceremony), its top decorated with two roundels, one containing bamboo and the other cherry flowers. Elegant object in Japanese taste, the body is made out of kiri (Paulownia tree) wood, perfect lacquer work, two parts fit perfectly, beautiful surfaces, in excellent condition. Diameter 1.82 inches.

Vintage Japanese Komai metal obidome (sash ornament) with gold and silver decoration of bamboo stem and leaves. Obidome is worn on an obi cord that holds the obi sash together, it is the only type of jewelry worn by Japanese women on formal occasions, and could serve as netsuke as well. Nice design, great quality crisp metalwork, two fittings for a cord on the back, in excellent condition. Stamped SUMIJI on the back. Diameter 1.4 inches.

Unusual early Showa period (1930s) Japanese mingei (Arts and Crafts) small shallow metal box with enamel decoration of a flowering prunus tree branches with leaves and blooms. Wonderful use of moriage (piled-up enamel) techniques, beautiful work, excellent patina, in perfect condition. Most probably made by the Ando company. Length 3 inches.

Unusual Japanese painted pewter scroll weight in a form of a seated boy wearing a shishi costume used in shishimai dance, one of his legs outstretched. Very well cast, pleasantly heavy, nicely painted, some wear to paint as can be seen on photos. Feels very nice in a palm, very appropriate piece for scholar’s desk. Length 2 1/4 inches.

Simple clever design, very beautiful fat natural coral branch with subtle light pink areas. Metal fixture with cutouts in cherry petal shapes and two loops on the back for an obi cord. Late Qing Dynasty (1890s to 1911) small Chinese Canton enamel covered box for seal paste painted on the top with polychrome enamels depicting a Chinese lady with a fan in a garden, border of flower spray reserves and scrolling vines. Nice quality painting with famille rose colors, all dark spots are original pitting marks. Quiet item for a scholar’s desk. Height 1 inch, diameter 2 1/4 inches.
