Late Meiji Japanese Bizen pottery ware chaire (tea caddy for storing powdered green tea used in tea ceremony) with slender body of rounded triangular section and narrow mouth. Wonderful potting, beautiful patina, very nice texture and play of colors to the glaze on its surface. Inscribed by the potter on the bottom. Turned bone cover lined with silver colored foil on the inside. Great piece in excellent condition. Height with cover 3 3/8 inches.

19th century Japanese raku ceramic box for use in tea ceremony potted and painted to represent yuzu citron with leaves. Could serve as chaire (tea caddy for powdered tea) or kogo (box for incense). Wonderful hand potting, excellent depiction of fruit skin texture. Stamped with RAKU character on the body by the foot. Comes with newer kiriwood box and wrapping cloth. Very pleasant feel of age, well-used, in great condition. Diameter 3 1/4 inches, height with cover 2 5/8 inches.

Rather unusual 1930s Japanese porcelain covered inkstone with underglaze decoration. The side of the base is inscribed with a very long text, the top of the cover has a short poem and a figure of a man in robe lighting his pipe from ambers in the brazier. Possibly Arita ware, very nice modeling of the central raised area with rougher side surface for grinding ink, remnants if dried ink in the well. Late 19th to early 20th century Japanese ceramic brush pot made in raku technique with rich multicolored glaze and an unglazed sector with stylized painting of autumn grasses. Beautifully made, awesome colors produced by raku process. Signed in gold lacquer with 2 characters on the back reading GERAKU. There appear to be characters incised into the body on the bottom, but I am not entirely sure. Unusual piece, pleasant to handle. Height 5 inches, maximum diameter at the top 4 5/8 inches.

Late Meiji (1890s to 1910s) netsuke of a standing fat baby boy wearing just a bib and holding a thick rope that serves as a collar for a puppy standing next to him. Excellent carving, great chubby face, superb depiction of his fat body and fingers. Nice flow to the rope with its twisted texture, expert use of black, orange and golden ink, beautiful wear and patina. Signed HOZAN on the bottom - the artist is listed in NETSUKE by Neil Davey (p. 470, number 741). Height 1 13/16 inches.

Unusually sculptural 18th century Indian bronze shrine in a form of a courtyard set around a Shiva lingam: Shiva and his wife Parvati, each one seated with one leg pendant, their backs against an ornate probhavali with sun and moon symbols, their elephant-headed son Ganesha, Nandi the bull of Shiva, and Naga (hooded cobra) rising protectively over the lingam. 18th century votive Indian bronze sculpture depicting the mother goddess Durga slaying the buffalo demon, and a small figure of her mount on her left- a roaring lion - biting the side of the demon Durga is the most powerful female deity in the Hindu pantheon. She has a spear in one front hand, and is grabbing the hair of Buffalo Demon Mahishasura with the other.
