19th century Satsuma vase of classic shape with painted enamel decoration of the Buddha surrounded by 7 rakan (original disciples), several female disciples and a boy attendant, with buildings, clouds and lotus flowers in the background. The Buddha is protected by a relief gold enameled dragon encircling the vase in its upper part. Excellent quality detailed painting - see fine depiction of their faces and supremely fine rich clothes with numerous patterns. Raised gold decoration, finely scattered tiny golden dots between figures, typical Satsuma earthenware body, beautiful finely crackled glaze. Great patina, very pleasant feel of age, in excellent condition. Golden lacquer irregularities on the body of the dragon (see enlargement 6, left photo) is not a restoration, but the way original firing splits were filled by the painter when making the vase. Signed in rectangular reserve on the bottom - the signature appears to read KITOSAI. Height 9.5 inches (24 cm).
