Charming small round painting in the original gold wood frame, 9 1/2" diameter as framed, the subject given on the reverse of the board in the artist's own handwriting: "Heilige Nacht in Villingen" ("Holy Night in Villingen"), also, "N. gem. v. Albert Sager" ("painted/executed by Albert Sager") signed there including the artist's most unusual monogram which includes the date of execution, 1922. That monogram is also incised carefully in the wet paint on the front side at right. The artist, Albert Sager (1866-1924) was from this small town in southwestern Germany, and he clearly had a deep affection for it, painting it and nearby areas. Portraits, landscapes and cityscapes by his hand are known. This work features a man in long coat on a winter's night, standing in the street by the light of a streetlamp, blowing some sort of long horn that must be traditional in the region. Snowflakes are falling in the light of the lamp, creating a most atmospheric effect. A fine addition to a small cozy wall. In 2024 a small museum in Villingen will hold an exhibition of works of the artist, who passed away only two years after he created this little painting. Painting is a bit darker and less orange-y in color than photos would suggest. Ask for better images.
