Decorative old antique floral painting, 17 1/4" by 13 1/4" (20 3/4" by 16 3/4" framed), unsigned, featuring a variety of flowers, including a tulip, in a decorative metallic vessel, all against a dark background, in the style going back to 17th century Holland. It is hard to know exactly how old the work is but mid 19th century would likely be a good guess. The canvas weave is rather coarse, promoting the earlier look. At first glance appearing to be a print, this is in fact a painstakingly executed watercolor drawing, likely French I am thinking, measuring 16" by 20 1/2" (23 3/4" by 28" framed). The subject is of formal 18th century (earlier?) figures lounging on a classical Versailles-like terrace. They are surrounded by a balustrade, fountain, distant trees, and, in the immediate foreground, a border of oversized flowers. In the style of noted California artist Ellen Burpee Farr, this is a classic late nineteenth century watercolor of the distinctive leaves and "berries" of the pepper tree commonly seen in Southern California. This is a miniature map, 3 3/8" by 4 7/8" inside the mat, titled at upper right "EUROPA", and bearing at lower right the name of the engraver cartographer, Pieter van den Keere (Petrus Kaerius). The entire sweep of Europe is shown, from Greenland and Atlantic islands on the west to as far east as Turkey, the Middle East, and "Tartaria". Kaerius (circa 1571-1646) was born in the Low Countries and fled to London due to religious persecution, in 1584. There he became established in engraving map...

Old print of what I believe are camellias, 10 1/2" by 8 1/2" inside the mat with hand-drawn outlines, 15 1/4" by 13" in what is now (but might not have been originally) a convincingly distressed gold frame, with hand coloring delicately applied. At upper right near the mat is "Pl." and a number so this was no doubt a plate from a book on botany. The item was probably framed in the early 1960's.
