A very desirable work: the ***original cover art for the November 2, 1960 issue of Palm Springs Life Magazine***, by one of California's best known mid 20th century illustrators, EARL CORDREY (1902-1977). This watercolor and gouache painting measures 17" by 12" and is executed on artist board. It depicts a Palm Springs landmark, the famous tower of the old El Mirador Hotel, dating to 1928. The tower stood through ups and downs in the economy, until it burned down in 1989. The city decided to build a replica of it from the original plans, and by 1991 it stood again----presently, on the campus of the Desert Regional Medical Center. While he studied art and worked in New York, where his paintings have been auctioned, the artist is now most associated with California and Mexico. The artist studied with Sam Hyde Harris briefly and for years contributed illustration art to various national publications. Condition is excellent; colors are very fresh and there is no discoloration or water damage. All in all this is an amusing scene that will definitely brighten a collector's day; note the hair and clothing styles. Considering the popularity of everything Fifties and Sixties, and the general renaissance of the Coachella Valley, this should find a home, perhaps, right back in the desert from whence it came.
