This is an eye-catching work in an electric-orange color palette, signed at lower right by important California painter EDWARD REEP (1918-2013). Painted in what appears to be a mixture of perhaps thinned oil and gouache, the work itself measures 22 1/2" by 13 1/2". It was found in a narrow modern green plastic frame that contrasts dramatically with the bright orange of the work itself. Signed boldly at lower right, this painting is on board. The family happened to have seen this online and the artist, while alive, in his 90's, viewed the images, but was unable to confirm or deny that it was his work. Later research by the family determined that this is indeed beyond any doubt an authentic work of Ed Reep. Reep's work is largely in watercolor but in the course of a long and productive career he worked worked with a variety of materials and in a number of different styles. The noted Santa Barbara gallery Sullivan Goss has written a biography of Reep's long life and there are several biographies on line. New York born, the artist was in Southern California by 1921 and was studying with the likes of Barse Miller, Willard Nash, Emil Bisttram, and Stanley Reckless at the Art Center School in Los Angeles by the year 1936. Several years later he was a member of the California Watercolor Society. World War II saw him in Europe and Africa sketching combat art, which brought him considerable recognition. After the war he taught at Chouinard School and by 1970 was a professor at East Carolina University. In the post war period Reep wrote several books on watercolor, and focused on not just technical aspects of the medium, but on the creative potential for expression. He retired in 1985, and passed on at an advanced age in 2013. In the lower quarter of the painting are some faint vertical drip marks which though undeniably present are not sufficiently obtrusive so as to affect the overall artistic impact of the painting. .
