For the aficionado of equine art, this is a beautifully composed watercolor and ink drawing of polo horses and players, signed at lower right by listed Arizona woman artist ALICE LORD MARSHALL (1895-1993). The work measures 11 1/2" by 15 1/2" inside the mat and 18 1/2" by 23" as framed. I recently acquired this from her grandson, formerly of the Phoenix area, now living in Pacific Palisades, California. He recalled her a long-lived woman with deep ties to Arizona, despite her eastern roots in East Orange, New Jersey. He also said she spent most of her life there, becoming very fond of the west, and horses, while painting mostly watercolor landscapes of Arizona and Mexico. Checking the net I see her listed on askart, where it is said she described herself as a "pioneer", in taking on the adventure of coming west as a young woman. Marshall became the first Girl Scout leader in Phoenix, and even today awards and facility buildings on Girl Scout properties in Arizona are named after her. This watercolor is in excellent condition, with fresh unfaded colors. It is taped around the edges to the old mat, as shown. A partial label on the reverse gives the title "Polo" and the original price: one dollar. I think from the signature and materials that this might have most likely been created from around 1940 through the early 1950's.
