By the Danish-American sculptor and painter who between the late 1920's and his death created the famous portraits of the presidents on a South Dakota mountain, is this impressionist seascape painting on board, in a delightful range of blues and whites, 20 1/2" by 28 3/4" (28 1/4" by 37 1/4" in the old frame in which I acquired this), signed at lower right by GUTZON BORGLUM (JOHN GUTZON BORGLUM, 1867-1941). This is a work possibly painted from a California memory of the artist, at a later date when he was in New York. The painting captures beautifully the puffy, fleeting, white clouds and the waves on an ocean. Borglum was born in Idaho and trained at the Academie Julian in Paris, where Rodin became an acquaintance. In the course of a long career on the west coast and then the New York City area, Borglum went on to become an accomplished landscape and seascape painter, and, ultimately, a very famous sculptor, the works of whom today span the nation, displayed in many public places and private collections. This painting, according to the individual from whom I purchased it in Massachusetts, came from the Toronto-area private collection of the Eatons of Canadian department store fame. It is a fragile work, the soft board showing cracks up to 4" from the edges, as shown. The reverse of the board reveals the old application of some linen muslin type cloth. All this was fitted into a frame of which the rabbet is not sufficiently wide to adequately support the work, so placing it in the present frame is neither totally satisfactory nor safe. I have removed it from that frame except for photography purposes. The painting will be shipped supported between stiff boards, the frame separate. Other than the two vertical cracks extending from the bottom edge, the condition is good, but careful handling is a must, until such point as this is properly mounted and framed.
