**ONE OF SEVERAL WORKS BY THIS WELL-LISTED ARTIST IN MY SHOP**Oil on canvas laid on board painting of colorful, flowering shrubs and bushes on a property by the Pacific shore, 14" by 18", unframed, signed at lower left by the California painter WILLIAM CONSTABLE ADAM (1846-1931). This is a typical work of an artist who is today best known for his depictions of the landscapes, gardens, and houses of the Monterey Peninsula area. Born in England, Adam studied in Paris, Glasgow and even Buenos Aires, before landing in Boston in 1893. Five years later he was in California, having fallen in love with the Monterey area. He remained there the rest of his life, painting landscapes of the local area and further afield in the state, and giving art lessons in a famous rose-covered cottage. Over time, he came to be called "Professor Adam". The artist left behind a fine legacy---colorful, sunny paintings of lovely places, inevitably very easy to live with. This example, is in need of a cleaning, as it is dirty, and appears to have some clumsy baby-blue color, later inpainting in the sky area. The first part of the signature is smudged, as shown. Once cleaned and framed, this will return to its original beauty.
