**ONE OF THREE ORIGINAL WORKS BY THE ARTIST IN MY SHOP**Gouache on paper, 13 1/2" by 11 1/4" in an old dark stained oak frame, the subject a lovely young lady contemplating a butterfly which has happened to have landed on her fingertip, signed on a fragment of the original work affixed to the backing, by the listed California and Illinois artist MARGO ALEXANDER (1894-1965). This is a whimsical and very feminine subject that would be a fine addition to a lady's dressing area perhaps. The artist studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and exhibited at the Golden Gate International Exposition in 1939. Subject matter is often whimsical, such as young children in colorful costumes. Prints of her work are commonly encountered, but originals are somewhat more scarce. This example was originally a larger work in each dimension, by several inches on a side; the previous owner related to me that the piece had such damage along the edges due to water compromising the delicate gouache, causing it to flake, that he cut off and discarded those portions, saving the undamaged portion of the image and re-framing it in this oak frame. Thankfully he had the sense to keep the signature portion. There is a little bit of evidence of the work's past condition issues, mainly a little flaking at extreme upper right corner, and a water spot at top left, but basically the image is stable. He said originally there was a castle at far left in the distance. Reframing in a larger frame with a mat, providing space between the glass and the paper, would better preserve the art.
