Oil on beveled heavy oak panel painting of a man and a woman talking through the iron bars of a large wall opening of a residence compound, providing a view into more greenery beyond, potted flowering plants and vines framing the central imagery, 14 1/4" by 8 1/2", unframed, signed in red at lower right "F. GOMEZ SOLANO" and dated there 1891. This is a charming little gem of a painting with fine detail and wonderful handling of the Mediterranean sunlight and shadow. Rather surprisingly I am unable to find an artist by this name in the auction records, despite considerable internet searching. I am sure he was likely known in his time. When found the painting was dirty and had some losses at top and bottom, but a high quality restoration including cleaning and modest inpainting in non critical areas has brought back its original beauty. A wide, deep ornate gold antique frame, if it could be found to fit, would bring this full circle. More research could turn up information on the artist.
