Late 19th century watercolor painting of a religious road-side shrine, probably outside of Rome, an imposing church dome (probably St. Peter's Basilica) forming the backdrop to the scene. The painting is signed at lower left "Conti"; it is possible it is a work of the listed artist Tito Conti (1842-1924) but I cannot say for certain that he was the artist. The unframed piece measures 14 3/4" by 11 1/4". Note the exceptionally fine detail throughout; the traditional clothing of the foreground figures is well drawn and the shrine looks almost photographic. Colors are sharp and fresh; there is a little paper browning at edges from old mat, some old tape residue on reverse, and a light handling crease in upper left sky, near inscription. That inscription is in old ink in Italian, with a date of 1929; it says "perche senti il ricordo della cara amicizia/Fausta Gina/Gennaio 1929/Roma". I believe this roughly translates as "Because you can hear the memory of dear friendship/Fausta Gina, January 1929 Rome". The inscription was clearly added many decades after the work was drawn.
