A fine watercolor painting of tulips in a vase, painted in a modernist style, 15 1/2" by 12" (28" by 24" framed), signed in pencil at lower right by artist JULIAN E. LEVI (1900-1982). The work is fresh and clean, and nicely matted and framed. Levi was born in New York and spent much of his life there. He did venture to Philadelphia for training at the Pennsylvania Academy under Arthur Carles, Daniel Garber, and Henry McCarter. The first half of the 1920's found him in Europe, absorbing the stimulating art scene. Levi took a particular interest in Cubism and the works of Juan Gris. In 1924 he exhibited with artists Charles Demuth (the works of whom this rather resembles), Hugh Breckinridge, and Franklin Watkins. By 1932 Levi was a member of the Federal Art Project. In 1940 his works were exhibited at the important Downtown Gallery, this facilitated by his long friendship with Yasuo Kuniyoshi, who was close to Edith Halpert at that prestigious gallery. Levi worked in watercolor and oil and also executed a number of prints. In 2004 a work similar to this sold at auction for $1,800.
