Antique hand-colored Italian engraving, the sheet 13 1/2" by 10" (15 3/4" by 12 1/4" framed), titled "IL MANGABEL". This is a work of the noted Italian engraver LUIGI RADOS (1773-1840). Rados studied engraving in Milan. He was the father of Eugene and Giovanni, who also went on to excellence in the profession. This illustration is of the species Simia aethiops Linn., known today commonly as the grivet or vervet monkey, native to Africa but imported into the Caribbean islands where they have become a nuisance. The face of this monkey as depicted is quite comical. Condition is as is commonly seen with antique prints over two hundred years old---uneven discoloration, some blotchy areas (a light area noticeable at lower left corner). The work carries a label that shows it was part of the Vincent Price Collection works, sold through Sears Roebuck and Co. The typed circa 1960's label states that this was obtained in Rome. Allow for reflections in the glass.
