A circa 1900 painting of two ladies who have apparently come to see the local priest in a courtyard, they pleading their case vigorously. The priest is accompanied by a sleeping cat. The table top with its interesting details is beautifully painted. The work, on canvas (relined), is signed at lower right "A. CALCAGNA". This is likely a shortened form of "Calcagnadoro" (for Italian painter ANTONINO CALCAGNADORO, 1876-1935)---the Artprice auction results site shows the full name, and the "Calcagna" portion in bold type, as if to suggest that he often signed that way. The artist was born in Rieti, northeast of Rome, and near the geographic heart of Italy. He trained with his father and then at the Institute of Fine Arts in Rome. Calcagnadoro painted frescoes and also executed some etchings. His later works from the teens and twenties are lighter and brighter in color and more impressionistic, and they are signed fully "A. Calcagnadoro". This is likely one of his earlier canvases. Measurements 20" by 31 1/2" (25" by 36 1/2" as framed). There are two old repairs visible at right in the dark field, if one holds the canvas at a certain angle; one about 2" in length, and the other, above and to the right of the priest's head, about 1 1/2".
