A striking, Mid Century, seventies oil on canvas abstract painting executed in a denim-like blue, the unusual and complex almost three dimensional-appearing pattern arising out of that base, 30" by 40", unframed, signed lower right "Karl McIntosh". McIntosh (1940-2009) was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma and passed away in Ogden, Utah, after a long career in fine art. McIntosh worked in illustration, and theater design, and painted futuristic and surrealistic paintings. I note that there is an African-American artist by that name, born 1941, who is active in the self-taught and naive art scene, creating colorful works that remind the viewer of Jacob Lawrence or Romare Bearden. The two artists seem to have become intertwined in cyberspace, their similar dates of birth adding to the confusion. There is a warp to the stretchers, moderate soiling, and color variations and light scuffs of foreign matter, attesting to some time in storage. The painting is unusual and the pattern complex and mesmerizing.
