Miniature oil on canvas laid on board painting of an ancient stone church in Mexico with a market under umbrellas completing the scene, 6 1/4" by 6 1/4" as framed, signed on the reverse paper and inscribed there "Market Day in Old Mexico by A. J. Merrill of Taos N.M. March 1970". Condition is excellent. Merrill was born in St. Louis but spent his early life in Montreal, Canada, graduating from McGill University in 1911 and taking art classes with A.J. Musgrove of Winnipeg and Franz Johnston (of Group of Seven fame) there before moving on to New York for art training at the Art Students League under Julius Delbos. Merrill was attracted to the American west, landing in Taos in 1946, where he became a familiar figure in the active New Mexico art scene.
