Oil on canvas, 14" by 18" (18" by 22" framed) poor condition, requiring re-line total restoration, signed at lower left and dated there 1908, by the well-listed Midwest artist LEON A. MAKIELSKI (1885-1974). The Pennsylvania-born artist after youth in South Bend, Indiana landed in Chicago in the early 1900's, studying and then instructing at the Art Institute; he would have been in Chicago environs in 1908 when this was painted so one could speculate if this scene might be the Indiana dunes, or possibly Michigan shore. After Chicago, the young artist headed to Paris, studying at the Academie Julian and Grande Chaumiere. He exhibited in the 1910 and 1911 Paris Salon. By 1913 he had returned to Michigan, setting down roots in Detroit and Ann Arbor. Today he is best known for his impressionist landscapes and still life, and for portraiture, at which he was particularly adept. CONDITION: edges match up; longest tear about 4", shorter one about 3", and then paint loss as shown. A painting well worth saving. Note Hudson Department Store label on backing.
