An impressively detailed circa 1860's watercolor of Lausanne in western Switzerland, signed at lower right by listed French artist Achille Gratien Gallier (1814-1871). The 150 year old work is in excellent condition, appearing to have been done yesterday. The scene is the Cathedral of Notre Dame (dating to as early as 1170) and nearby buildings, with tiny figures in the foreground, and even their hound dogs playing at lower left. Measurements are 10 1/4" by 9 1/4" and 17 1/4" by 16" in a modern day wood strip frame with UV protective glass. The biography of Gallier appears to be sparse. He painted oils and watercolors in France and nearby Switzerland. This came from the recently broken up estate of a proud Swiss-ancestry gentleman in Los Angeles, one Pierre Odier (1940-1923). Odier, from an old distinguished Swiss family, lived a most rare and interesting life, having traveled to over 120 countries. As a past president and longtime member of the exclusive, private Los Angeles Explorers' Club, he was enthused about our geographical world, its peoples, and cultures. His home was a repository of fascinating curios, art, and artifacts from all over the globe. Later in life he was an educator in photography and fine art in local schools in Glendale, California. R.I.P. Mr. Odier, and congratulations on a rich, full life well-lived. An October 2022 account of one of his adventures appears online on YouTube. **white spot at top of primary image is just a reflection**
