“New Mexico” by Augustus Dunbier, c.1970, oil on canvas, 20” x 24”, framed, signed lower left. Painted towards the end of his career; a culmination of all the influences of his education and early career can be seen in this work. Most of his late canvases were painted in New Mexico. This work shows the early lessons from Germany’s Dusseldorf Academy where he learned to paint in the “dark manner” of the old masters. Here the shadowed folds of mountains run deep. Bio: Augustus William Dunbier (1888 – 1977), was a Nebraskan Impressionist painter, best known for his landscapes. Dunbier was educated in Germany and the Art Institute of Chicago. He often worked in the southwest United States and painted landscapes, still lives, and portraits. One of his students was fellow Nebraska artist Eve Ryder. After color, Dunbier‘s next sacred thing was the out-of-doors. Painting in “plein aire” was vitally important and Dunbier almost always would create his works after dragging all his equipment up to a bluff overlooking the Missouri River or out to his artist friend Robert Gilder’s home. Because of his desire to capture his subject at a specific moment, he applied his paint vigorously and quickly and usually finished a canvas within a few hours. Provenance: Anthony Child purchased these works from the artist in New Mexico prior to his death. L’Enfant Gallery purchased two works by this artist from Childs’ former client. Antony Thomas Childs died in 1994 age 57 at his home in Georgetown from AIDS. He was one of the Washington area's leading interior designers, died June 18. He had AIDS. Mr. Childs established the Antony Childs & Associates interior design firm in 1969. Over the years, his work was applauded by his peers and by the media*. *ANTONY CHILDS, 57, DIES - The Washington Post
