(1906-1983), oil on canvas, 24” x 18”, framed. “When Matisse came to America and was asked by Mr Philips (of The Philips Collection) who he wanted to meet, and he replied; Manfred Schwarz and Edward Rosenfeld” so says Peter Colasante. Provenance: Peter discovered Edward through a great friend and expert John Swanner. Peter explains how he acquired Rosenfeld’s work: “John frequently visited Howard Street in Baltimore. In the 1970’s there were still 30 small shops with dealers. These dealers were vestiges of Baltimore’s spectacular cosmopolitan past. John knew Eddy and had collected his paintings for many years. Although a self-taught Jewish American painter, he was so well thought of by experts in the field, that Mr Philips gave a room to Eddy and still holds his works including ‘The Kitchen Sink’, 1930. Edward was born No 5, Tyson Street, in a house that was heated by a pot belly stove in the kitchen. He received artists, critics and the great Mr Philips in this kitchen. He lived and died here. I visited the house but after he died. I arranged with John Swanner to have a show and birthday 80th party for Edward, but he very sadly died just before the show opened. In 1980’s the Philips redid their rooms and I bought 17 of their Rosenfeld collections. I was very happy. This flower painting is not one of those purchased from the Philips, but one I bought from John Swanner”.
