A very rare piece to find, this long sterling necklace bears the signature of "La Azteca", about whom almost nothing was known until now - please refer to my blog at vintagemexicansilver. blogspot.com (no space but Trocadero software wouldn't allow it otherwise) to see what I have unearthed about them!
I have only come upon a couple of other pieces with the same hallmarks, all round zodiac brooches with turquoise chip inlay yet the necklace here is by far a superior example of their work.
Unusually long , this is definitely not a choker and its weight is quite generous. Its links are nicely worked, with deep chasing and very good oxidation in the recesses and a flurry of beading to accent the contours of the design.
The necklace measures a total of 20" in length (19 1/4" not measuring the hook of the clasp) by 1 1/4" wide and it weighs 96.2 grams. It is marked "LA AZTECA" as well as "SILVER MEXICO" and dates in the pre-1948 period. In excellent vintage condition with just the patina you want to see on a piece old and well-loved.
