Hans Kleiss was an Orientalist/ Africanist painter, illustrator, and caricaturist. He was the husband of Orientalist painter Yvonne Kleiss-Herzig. They both lived for long periods in North Africa (Morocco and Algeria). They settled together in Sidi Slimane (Morocco) in the early fifties before returning to France...

He studied in Berlin in the early twenties before moving to Paris. His first solo exhibition was in his homeland at the National Theatre in Kaunas in 1925. A wonderfully compact composition with fishermen of Urk (Holland) hauling their nets and contemplating their catch with boats in the background.
