“Burano Afternoon” Oil on board, signed by Morris Hall Pancoast (1877-1963). This rare fine piece comes from Pancoast’s early career when he traveled in Europe before establishing a successful career in New York. His unique impressionist style and use of color are already discernable in this refreshing work of a canal in Burano, Italy (a colorful outer island in Venice). Morris Pancoast, the famous impressionist listed artist, born in Salem, New Jersey, studied art in Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, in Paris at the Academie Julian under Jean Paul Laurens and then traveled throughout Europe honing his technique. He was a member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, Glouscester Society of Artists, North Shore Art Association, Pennsylvania Academy Society of Artists, Philadelphia Art Alliance and the Salumagundi Club. His paintings are on display at the J.B. Speed Art Museum, Louisville, Kentucky; Milwaukee Art Museum, Wisconsin; Municipal Art League, Williamsport, Pennsylvania; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia; and the Reading Public Museum and Art Gallery in Pennsylvania. Pancoast paintings have enjoyed a strong market demand including the sale at $11,750 of lot 4 “A Snowy Day” at Christie’s New York on October 3, 2001 and $9,900 of lot 244 at Skinner Inc. on March 13, 1992. Comparable Pancoast paintings’ price per square inch range from $16.32 to $33.60, meaning the comparable market price for this piece ranges from $11,750 to $24,192. This is a special opportunity to own a fine work of an American Master Artist at a great value. Dimensions: 36” X 30” with frame, 30” X 24” without.
