Bijin-ga Ukiyoe Painted with ink and pigments on paper. Signed and sealed. Circa early 19th c., or older.

It depicts a beautiful woman wearing a gorgeous kimono with patterns of musical instruments such as drums and shibori drawn on it. This work depicts a courtesan in the early 18th century, with her luxurious kimono, tortoiseshell comb, long hairstyle hanging down her back, and the way she ties her obi. In her hand, a hat called eboshi, which was used in Noh theater, and a fan were painted in gold paint, and from this, it is believed that this is a depiction of Onna Sarugaku(female noh play), which was popular from the Azuchi-Momoyama period to the early Edo period. Onna Sarugaku was mainly performed by shrine maidens and courtesan on the riverbanks of Kyoto. This is a valuable work that vividly depicts the scenes of the time.

Some marks, loss of pigments, damage, crease and foxing are present on the painting itself due to its great age. Some marks, crease, and damage are present on the scroll mounting. It is accompanied by a paulownia wood storage box. The side of the scroll end is missing, which is not visible from the front.
