Ninsei Style Iron Painted Bowl by Kiyomizu Rokubei IV (1848-1920)
The seal of the potter is stamped on the bottom.
Rokubei Kiyomizu IV belongs to one of the most influential Kiyomizu family of potters. He was born in 1848 as the eldest son of Rokubei Kiyomizu III. He got his family title and the name Rokubei IV in 1883 when he joined the Toyukai artists’ association.
Rokubei IV was active in Kyoto art circles, helping to establish the Gojozaka Ceramics Union, the Yutoen ceramics organization, the Society for Ceramics Appreciation, and the Kami Kai with painter/ designer Kamisaka Sekka. He co-established the Kyoto Ceramic Research Institute in 1895.
He retired in 1902 and passed his title to Rokubei V in 1913.
The style of Rokubei IV is smooth and elegant, reflecting his own refined character. His works are often considered the best among all the works of the succeeding Rokubei generations.
The Tokyo National Museum garden holds the porcelain Toro lantern made Rokubei Kiyomizu IV next to its premises.
The Rokubei family is leaded by 8th generation now with over 240 years of history.
