An incredible monumental triangular architectural pediment, chua from Thailand. Carved of wood in high relief, the design is of scrolling peony vines entwining monkey figures. The anthropomorphized monkeys, dressed in clothing and with human hands, are suggestive of the Hindu deity, Hanuman. In keeping with the Hindu/Buddhist theme, makara heads emerge from the ends of the scrolling peony vines. A lotus petal edge motif suggests the Buddhist aspect of the carving and possibly the building it once belonged to.
