An antique Japanese two section Mizuya Tansu (kitchen chest) made of Hinoki (Cypress), Kakinoki (Persimmon) and Suginoki (Cryptomeria) woods. It originated from the Suruga region of Japan (now Shizuoka prefecture).

Unique configuration of sliding doors, drawers and hidden storage compartment makes this tansu a versatile and beautiful work of art. The Persimmon wood panels and drawer fronts were purposefully chosen by the original tansu maker with the bottom drawers representing waves of water, the center drawers depicting hills and mountains and the upper panels representing clouds.

The sides feature horizontal supports for strength and durability and the chest was constructed using through mortise and tenon joinery for years of future function and enjoyment. The compartment behind the sliding glass doors was used to showcase important porcelain serving dishes while the area behind the lattice doors was used to store food similar to the western pie safe. To the right of the glass doors is a removable panel that hides an additional storage area.

Dimensions: 35 3/4" Wide by 61 1/4" High by 16" Deep
