Antique Japanese suzuribako (calligraphy writing box) for a merchant. Made of keyaki (elm) wood burl with iron hardware. Two drawers: one for writing implements and one drawer with a lock for keeping money, seals, and important documents safe. A top compartment with a hinged lid would have kept an ink stone.

Age: Meiji Period 1868-1912)

Dimensions: 8 3/4" high x 8 1/2" wide x 12 7/8" deep
