This barrel-shaped ‘Fustat bead’ is made of six sections of spiral mosaic cane laid next to each other longitudinally in alternating directions, creating a zigzag effect. The striping is the same in all cane sections—wide black, thin red, wide brown, thin red—only the direction changes. The core of the twisted cane sections, visible in cross-section at the ends of the bead, is translucent pale green. There is no core bead, the cane sections themselves were shaped into a bead...

Relics of the Nile is pleased to present this collection of Egyptian faience amulets. The amulets range in size from 5/8" to 1" each in height. Included are an amulet of Anubis, a standing goddess, shu, a seated Isis with Horus, and the cat deity Bastet All have completely intact and unclogged suspension loops and the she amulet has a collection number remaining on the bottom. Fragmentary figure of Serapis. With thick wavy hair and thick beard. 2nd/3rd Century A.D. 3 inches high. Mounted. Old Belgian collection. Serapis was an Egyptian god whose devotees united the worship of the Apis bull and the god Osiris. His cult, which originated at Memphis, rose to its greatest significance at Alexandria during the reign of Ptolemy I.

A finely engraved Hyksos scarab, 17th.-16th. cent. BC.

The scarab is engraved with robe pattern in the center and with other hieroglyphs to each side, untranslated.

The seat of power of the Hyksos kings was the city of Avaris in the Nile Delta, from where they ruled over Lower Egypt and Middle Egypt up to Cusae.

Size: 19 x 13,5 mm.

Condition: Nice Very fine and completely intact with remnants of torquise glaze in the devices.

The attractive upperparts of two larger figural pendant of Pataikos and Shu, Late Period, 7th.-3rd. century BC.

Detailed faience of good colour.

Size: 35-37 mm. tall.

Provenance: Formerly in the private collection of Eberhard Hanfstaengl (1886-1973). He was a famous German Art director and head of the Berlin National Gallery as well as other higher positions. Educated as Art Historian. Comes with COA.

Certain items of jewelry, such as the scarab, carried religious significance to the ancient Egyptians. The scarab represented rebirth, so it was essential to have one or more scarabs adorning the deceased in order to ensure reincarnation to the next level. The owner's name was inscribed on the stone so that his spirit would know it was his.
