Rather unusual 19th century Japanese bronze scroll weight in a form of a chestnut. Clever design in Japanese taste, superb naturalistic modeling (see perfectly worked texture of the bottom), beautiful warm brown patina, beautiful gilding, pleasantly heavy. A bronze foodog that was a finial on a larger bronze piece of art. The shishi is well formed with good detail, and has a beautiful patina. The dog/lion measures about 3 1/2" high x 3 1/2" long, and dates to the 19th Century or earlier. The condition is very good. The only damage is to the base where it was broken off. The asking price includes shipping within the USA.

Fine Japanese antique engraved damascene cigarette case, observe side decorated with landscape scene and reversed side with boats and birds in flight, inside box is also decorated with birds in flight, late 19th century period. Size; length of case is 3 1/2 inches with a minor dent to the upper right side.

Late Meiji - early Taisho (1910s) unusual small Japanese keyaki (zelkova serrata - Japanese elm) wood box, its top inlaid with a metal fitting depicting a seated boy wearing flower decorated robe and having a look of melancholy on his face. I believe it represents Kikujido - the Chrysanthemum Boy - the Emperor’s favorite page, who was condemned to exile. The Emperor taught Kikujido a phrase by the Buddha to thank him for his loyalty...

Late Meiji - early Taisho (1910s) unusual Japanese wooden box, its cover inlaid with a metal fitting depicting seated young Kintaro petting one of his companions - a hare - as he is about to give it a treat, and his huge axe behind him. According to a Japanese legend Kintaro (also known as Kintoki) was the child of the forest raised by the mountain witch Yama Uba, and possessed an extraordinary strength...

An Early Japanese Bronze Mirror, Kagami, Circa 1600. (No.1) This bronze mirror (kagami) was almost certainly made in the Momoyama period. It has a turtle (minogame) as a central boss, pierced for a cord. It also features a pair of cranes, their beaks touching the head of the turtle as in the act of kissing. This beneath a splendid pine tree. Under the turtle is found the inscription 'Tenjō' (?) possibly meaning Heaven.

Approximately 10.4cm diameter...

19th century Japanese silver two pronged kanzashi - a hair pin - with ear pick spoon on the terminal and decoration of a sacred key and Daikoku’s magic mallet. Excellent and clever piece implying a wish of wealth to the owner, with superb quality work - see the incised wood texture of the mallet. I did not test the metal, but confident that it is silver, the sacred key is gilded. Some tarnished areas, can be cleaned if needed. Length 6 3/4 inches.

A mirror made of copper with wood stand which is one of "Sanshu-no-Jingi", the Three Imperial Regalia. In ancient time, all natural objects and phenomena were worshipped in Shinto, but three items such as mirror, jewel and sword are objects to be worshipped later. A mirror is often put in the shrine pavilion these days. This mirror is rather small, so it might have been put in a house shrine. In excellent condition with molded auspicious design with a crane, a turtle, pine trees and bamboos...

Well cast Japanese Edo period round-form bronze kagami (mirror) decorated in relief with a motif of cranes among pines. The perforated central boss, which is designed to hold a tassel, is in the form of a minogame (tortoise). Two cranes reach toward each other with their beaks to kiss the head of the tortoise. Marked "Tenka" (all under Heaven) at the lower right. This decorative motif has been attributed to the Momoyama period (16th/17th century)...

Rather unusual 19th century Japanese bronze box for use in the incense game, when the player was blindfolded and given an incense to identify. Three cutouts on the top are made in a shape of paulownia crest used by the Tokugawa Shogun family. The paulownia crest was Imperial and represented the Emperor, but it could be bestowed on someone whose service to the throne was most important. Shoguns Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi were using it before Tokugawa...

Lovely vintage reclining solid cast image of the Buddha lying on his deathbed about to enter Parinirvana, circa mid-20th century, from Japan or possibly Korea. He has serene expression and the multiple folds in his robe are particularly well done. L: 14.5cm/5.8in.
