Namban (or Nanban, Southern barbarian) decoration of a foreign figure, with dog, falconing in picturesque landscape. Painterly shironuki decoration in the cavetto of cranes flying among clouds. Edo period, Circa 1800. Good condition for its age, with two small chips inside the foot rim and a small glaze abrasion just above the foot rim. About 3 15/16 inches (10 cm) square.

A finely painted sometsuke bowls decorated with alternating reserves of three leaping koi divided by a criss-cross ground or “nets” and a central motif of a Chinese landscape featuring a figure collecting fire wood with his head looking skyward. This is probably a representation of Ceng Shen (So Shin) collecting fire wood, a disciple of Confucius , who whilst looking at the moon suddenly became aware that his mother needed him, a popular Confucian parable of filial piety...

Used for ceremonial purposes by the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties. Traditionally, the jue vessel was made of bronze with a pouring spout on either end and a pair of capped posts rising from the rim. This piece, although in the shape of a jue, is done in fine, powdery-blue celadon and is described on the tomobako as being a jue-shaped incense burner (korou).

A dish in the form of an auspicious Manchurian Red Crowned Crane decorated in green, black and iron red enamels with gilding. Dating Kyoho in period circa 1710-30. The dish measures approximately 17cm in wingspan and approximately 13 cm from tail to head. The White Elephant in Buddhism is symbolic of mental strength achieved through the practice of the Dharma. Decorated in underglaze blue with floral scrolls and auspicious clouds set against pink and turquoise enamel grounds inset with chrysanthemum motifs enriched with gilding. A very unusual shallow bowl decorated in somenishiki-de style with a fanciful landscape featuring a Namban figure, a Portugese perhaps rather than a Dutchman, accompanied by a servant with parasol, walking to and from some sort of compound in the background with a curious barrel shaped tower. The well of the bowl and the exterior decorated in underglaze blue with a Shou symbol, Kotobuki, and three pussy foot Dragons to the exterior of the bowl...
