An okimono of a shishi by the important Kyoto ceramicist Miyanaga Tozan I (1868-1941). Simultaneously fierce and endearing, this fine example of Japanese celadon is 5” (13 cm) tall and in excellent condition. Seal of the artist on the bottom. A graduate of the prestigious Tokyo University of Art, Tozan traveled to Europe in the early years of the 20th century to broaden his artistic skills and knowledge. The artist was especially known for his work in the demanding medium of celadon ware, producing both monumental, large vases and figures and small, delicate pieces. In addition to wonderful tea ware, Tozan I was also famous for shishi sculptures, as demonstrated in this classic example.
